The DeLorean Motor Company has presented its new electric car a good 40 years after the “original”. The DeLorean EV Alpha5 has little in common with the original, apart from the name. It is a modern electric car that also has a new design.
The DeLorean EV Alpha5 has now been presented as part of an “Early Access” campaign on the DeLorean Motor Company (DMC) website. The company doesn’t want to fully unveil the vehicle until tomorrow, because then there will be another first public presentation. The current company behind the project has nothing to do with the original manufacturer of the DMC-12, made famous by the films of the “Back to the Future” series, apart from the name.
The new DeLorean EV hardly adopts any design elements from its “predecessor”, although some similarities can be discovered in some details. The new vehicle has two huge gullwing doors that give access to the four seats in the interior. There is also a stepped spoiler on the rear part of the roof, which resembles the “cat ladder” of the DMC-12.
The design comes from the company ItalDesign of the designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, which decades ago was also responsible for the design of the “original” DeLoreans. According to the current plans of the newly founded manufacturer, the new model should come with a 100kWh battery and offer a purely electric range of more than 400 kilometers.
The new electric DeLorean Alpha5 will then probably have all-wheel drive and a dual-motor concept, which will allow it to accelerate to 96 km/h in under three seconds and to the famous “88 miles per hour” in just 4.35 seconds . The top speed is given as 250 km/h.
The above information apparently only applies to the “Base Performance Model” of the Alpha5, i.e. the basic version. Which further variants are planned and how equipped is currently still open. The new DeLorean EV is scheduled to go into production in the coming years, for which the DeLorean Motor Company is relying on a new plant in the US state of Texas. The price of the new DeLorean will probably be around $175,000.
